Introduction

Efficient logistics and precise inventory management are foundational to the successful development and execution of utility-scale renewable energy projects. This case study highlights how a leading North American utility-scale solar developer and EPC company strategically partnered with One Source Freight Solutions to overcome hurdles in maintaining accurate inventory and ensuring timely material deliveries to project sites. The collaboration demonstrates the significant impact of specialized logistics in streamlining operations and supporting the growth of the solar energy sector.

Challenge

Prior to engaging a specialized logistics partner, the company faced challenges in maintaining high levels of inventory accuracy for the numerous components required at their build sites. Ensuring timely outbound deliveries of critical materials, such as torque tubes and c-posts, to often remote locations also presented complexities that impacted project timelines and efficiency.

Solution: Partnership

To address these challenges, the company strategically outsourced its logistics operations for several key projects in the central and western United States to One Source Freight Solutions (OSFS). This partnership involved establishing and managing dedicated storage facilities in Indiana and Kentucky for millions of metal components. OSFS also oversaw the transportation of these components, along with solar modules from storage sites in Arizona, Washington, and Utah, directly to the company’s job sites.

Results

  • Over 98% inventory accuracy across multiple storage facilities since 2018

  • 99% on-time outbound load to plan for thousands of truckloads to sites

  • Less than .005% damages and claims filed for millions of products handled

  • A successful, multi-year partnership since 2018
